The community is struggling to rebuild its business base. At the moment they are losing about 15 jobs a week from secondary effects from the fire and the local unemployment rate has to jumped nearly 10% above the pre-fire rate.
The Bernat Mill Complex was an arts and culture center and many working artists had their entire life's work in the building when the fire happened. In addition, there was a recording studio in the same building and several local musicians lost all of their instruments and sound equipment.
The Phoenix Festival of Music and Art will be held at the Uxbridge Farm and Fairgrounds September 8 (rain date October 13) located at 186 Mendon Road, Uxbridge, Massachusetts and will be a benefit event for the Friends of the Bernat Mill Fund for humanitarian relief.
The music festival will include 7 bands, 6 traditional music acts, and include the musicians and artists of the Bernat Mill community as well as art from locally and nationally renowned artists. There will also be an art auction to raise funds for humanitarian relief. We are asking the art community to consider donating one piece that could be sold in the auction.
Musical groups participating include the Blacktone Valley Community Concert Band, Grand Evolution, Mike G and Associates, Ernie and the Automatics among others.
If you are or know an artist, musician or vendor interested in participating in the Phoenix Festival or donating a work to the art auction, please put them in touch with me or they can sign up online at www.helpuxbridge.com.
We are also inviting those unable to participate because of distance or schedule conflicts, to make a donation to the Friends of the Bernat Mill fund. You can send a check or electronic funds transfer to Unibank for Savings, 49 Church Street, Whitinsville, Massachusetts 01588. Chris Foley at Unibank is the fund manager and can be reached at: 508-234-8112 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. EST.
